Whilst the Tennis Brain website of course does not disclose the full workings of the prediction mechanism, the page suggests that it takes into account many factors beyond historical results to provide market beating predictions, including form, momentum, serve, return, experience, come back strength & much more. The model is continually refined and evolves as conditions of the sport adjust & it is frequently tested against historical sample periods.

Tennis Brain is a high volume offering covering the main ATP & WTA tours but also the lower tiered Challengers & ITF circuits. With tournaments played across the globe most weeks of the year you can expect 10+ value predictions each day in the early stages of each week. Predictions are made for both the Match Odds & Set Betting markets giving you different game perspectives to play.

Most selection services are based on one of two things. They are either built on a statistical model: a mathematical framework that uses historical data and probability to predict an event outcome, calculating the true probability of an event, allowing the identification of betting opportunities with a positive expected value compared to bookmaker odds. Or, they are based on extensive knowledge of a sport, in-depth research and a little bit of intuition. Tennis Brain provides tools that combine both. Many predictions come with a Match Brief section that provides additional contextual information where AI assesses weather, playing styles, and tour commentary (interviews, timeouts, post-match analysis), groups the findings into four areas, and overlays them on the model prediction with an agreement score. This allows you to assess whether real world conditions align to the model prediction. Use of both tools can greatly aid decision making and can vastly improve the confidence of your selections.

Getting Started…

With Tennis Brain I feel it is very important to get a feel for how everything works & to get an understanding of the platform before you start risking any of your capital. Whilst the dashboards are intuitive it did take a while to understand the past results. I suggest, first going to the Back Test page where you can play around with the historic results of the system. You can use this without a paid subscription to the service.

The Back Test page allows you to test either the ATP or WTA tours with two tiers of customisation available. The first tier allows you to set the following parameters…

• Probability Threshold – The minimum win probability for predictions to include in the output, e.g if you set to 50%, only selections with a model probability of 50% or more will be included.
• Edge Threshold (pp) – PP stands for percentage points and is simply the percentage edge for predictions to include. For example if set to 5, only selections that represent a 5% edge over the market odds will be included.
• Trade Cost – This is simply the Betfair commission you pay as a percentage. Whatever you set will be deducted from winning bets in the output.

The second tier of customisable variables is a set of 4 tick boxes which adjusts the model to certain conditions. These include…

• Surface Win Rate
• Common Opponent
• Quality Wins
• Recent Form

By running some back tests you can decide on how you would like the model to filter selections to meet your betting style & get a view of profits, ROI & volatility etc. Once you have determined what suites you it is important to set these configurations on the Account tab. Once set, the Predictions tab will align to your historical back test.

The Predictions tab is the key area you will use day to day to find your value selections. On this space you will see all of the matches for the day and you can switch between Mens & Womens draws. All matches are grouped into tournaments. Next to each match you will see the current Betfair exchange odds & the the true win probability predicted by the model represented as a green/red slider. If a player is deemed to have an edge greater than or equal to your account Edge (pp) setting it will have a green or red tennis ball next to the player name. You can filter to maches offering value only by checking the green Value matches check box.

The Predictions tab defaults to Match Winners however you can switch to Set Predictions by clicking the button at the top right. The Set Winner page has the same layout and format and identifies value in the 4 (or 6 in men’s Grand Slam) Set Betting market outcomes.

Beneath each match is an Attributes link. The Attributes page shown below shows the areas of stength for each player in areas such as form, win rate, server, return etc. This will allow you to delve deeper into value predictions made by the model to see if you are in full agreement and also lends itself very well to traders where for example, identifying a weak server might be important to you.

Another link beneath each match of note is Match Brief. As discussed, most betting systems are built on one of two things. Either a statistical model or a combination of extensive research plus intuition. Tennis Brain combines the two and it is on the Match Brief tab where you will find your match research. Here, AI assesses all areas of the match & uses internet sources for additional information that might affect the outcome. The orange progress bar highlights to what extent the research agrees with the model prediction. Use of both the model and the Match Brief tab can increase the degree of confidence you have in a prediction.

Tennis Brain offers a wealth of information to make informed decisions but the premise is straight forward. Use the Predictions tab to find value predictions identified by the model, back these up with research data & then place bets with confidence.

Tennis Brain Staking

Tennis Brain does not recommend a specific staking plan for members using the service. All historical results shown on the Back Test page are calculated using simple level stakes, providing a straightforward benchmark for assessing the model’s performance.

However, because Tennis Brain provides not only betting selections but also its own true outcome probabilities, the service lends itself particularly well to more sophisticated staking strategies. With an estimated edge available for each selection, a variation of the Kelly staking approach could potentially be used to adjust stakes according to the strength of that edge.

Service Pricing & Membership Packages

Tennis Brain has adopted a simple and transparent pricing structure. There are no membership tiers or feature-based packages to choose from, only the length of your subscription. Members can choose from the following options:

• Monthly Membership @ £19.99 per month.
• Annual Membership @ £179.99 per year, representing a saving of £59 compared with paying monthly.

Both subscriptions provide access to exactly the same features and include a 7-day trial for just £1 before the first full payment is taken.

If our exchange trial produces results in line with the service’s historical performance, the subscription fee represents excellent value. Considering the breadth of ATP, WTA and ITF coverage, together with the high volume of value selections generated.

Exchange Trial

For our Tennis Brain exchange trial, we will begin by configuring the account settings to define the criteria that predictions must meet before they are presented to us. We will use an Edge of 5 percentage points, a minimum probability of 50%, and select Surface Win Rate as the only additional filter.

These settings have been chosen following testing with the Back Test tool and are intended to provide greater consistency in the selections while helping to reduce volatility. Requiring a minimum 5% edge produces a significantly stronger overall ROI in the back-tested results, giving us some additional headroom. Setting the minimum probability at 50% also removes the larger outsider selections, which should help produce a smoother overall performance curve.

We will initially use the model predictions only. At a later stage, we may assess whether incorporating the Match Brief into our selection criteria improves results. For the trial, we will back every qualifying selection that meets our criteria, regardless of whether it comes from the ATP, WTA or ITF tours.

To keep the trial straightforward and maintain consistency with the back-tested results, we will use a level staking approach. The historical testing of our chosen settings indicates a maximum drawdown of approximately 15 points. We will therefore allocate a 50-point betting bank of £1250 (£25 per point), providing sufficient headroom to withstand two of these bad runs.

Once we have collected an initial live results set, we may also assess alternative staking strategies to determine whether the model’s calculated edge can be used to improve returns.

As with our other exchange trials, we will aim to record at least 1,000 bets before drawing any firm conclusions about the long-term performance of Tennis Brain on the exchanges.
